Department of Public Works Takes Firm Stance on FOG Discharge in Aruba's HORECA Sector, Urges Immediate Action"

The Department of Public Works is deeply concerned about the recurring incidents of Fats, Oil, and Grease (FOG) discharge in the sewer systems of the HORECA Sector (Low Rise and High Rise).

These discharges have had a detrimental impact on the biological treatment process at the Bubali Wastewater Treatment Plant, leading to unpleasant odors in the surrounding area. The Department urges those responsible for these actions to cease immediately.

Over the past weeks, our monitoring personnel have revealed a significant increase in FOG discharge at our lift station located in the High Rise Area, particularly on Thursday mornings. This week alone, we have observed these incidents yesterday and today, further worsening the situation. The accumulation of FOG in the sewer systems not only compromises the efficiency of the wastewater treatment process but also poses environmental and health risks.

The Department of Public Works recognizes the seriousness of this issue and is actively taking measures to address it. We are collaborating closely with relevant stakeholders to implement immediate solutions. Additionally, we are enhancing our monitoring protocols and enforcement strategies to prevent further occurrences and ensure compliance with the necessary regulations.

The discharge of  FOG not only affects the functionality of the wastewater treatment plant but also impacts the overall well-being of the community. The Department of Public Works urges all businesses and individuals operating in the HORECA Sector (Low Rise and High Rise) to exercise responsibility and adopt best practices in managing their FOG waste. Proper disposal methods, such as utilizing grease traps and authorized collection services, are essential to prevent adverse effects on the sewer systems and maintain a healthy environment for residents and visitors.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely, and stringent actions will be taken against those found in violation.
